Plan-with-me - Supplies used in Word of the Year Journal
This is one of those classes where you don't have to use the exact supplies I am using. This applies especially to the choice of journal. If you want to use watercolor paints in your journal you will want to use a paper with a thickness of 160 gsm but there are a lot of choices out there. Also, I strongly suggest a dotted journal because it makes writing, drawing, and structuring planning pages easier and consistent.
You'll notice I am using some stencils in my journal, listed below. You can certainly draw your own banners or use other stencils, although using especially the Planner Banner Ribbons stencil will definitely make drawing and painting banners easy to make in your journal.
As far as pens go, I've listed my favorites below. I seem to always go back to the Micron pens, but other pens will work too. Having a set of waterproof black drawing pens is the most important. If you want to use metallic gold pens, those would be the next priority, then any pens or pencils you want. I will likely be experimenting with various pens and pencils throughout the year.
You can use any brand of watercolor paints. I am using mostly Qor but also some Winsor Newton and Blick. The main colors I'm using so far are listed in the list below.

NOTE: Of course you can use any stencils you like.The Planner Banner Ribbons and the Script Sans Alphabet ones are the ones I use the most. I have a lot of stencils, but they are not all necessary. I've listed them in the order of the most used at the top. Use the stencils you like the most, and as much or little as desired
I am demonstrating mostly in watercolor and pen, but you could also use other media like colored pencils, pens & Gelatos®. Supplies used: Dotted, page numbered 160 gsm journal notebook. NOTE: There are many journals on the market like the one I am using (186 pages) with 160 gsm dotted paper. The thicker 160 gsm works well with watercolor, but I wouldn't go thinner than that for wet media.

Watercolors (QOR brand): Indigo, Cobalt Teal, Permanent Scarlet, Raw Siena, Burnt Umber, Neutral Tint, Quinacridone Gold, Diarylide Yellow, Thalo Blue, Ultramarine Blue, Paynes Gray, Sap Green
NOTE on watercolors: I have been happy with most of the watercolors I've used like Windsor Newton, Koi, Grumbacher and even Blick. I splurged on a set of 24 colors you see me painting with since they're made by Golden and many of the colors are the same as the acrylics I use. Most of those colors are from a Qor set of 24 (5 ml tubes) from Jerry's Artorama. I bought a tube of Qor Indigo (11 ml) separately and it has become my favorite. I use it all the time, but a Paynes Gray is similar. I think Pan watercolors could also be used. I have a travel Koi set, but if I were going to use it for this course I would cut a rectangle the size and shape of a watercolor cake out of a piece of mylar so the colors next to it wouldn't get onto the sponge when I'm stenciling.

Hi there!
I’m Valerie.Creating has been a solace for as long as I can remember. Art making has been a continual source of comfort and joy in processing my life and helping me to connect with my Creator, and other like-hearted people.
I absolutely love sharing in the ‘Aha’ moment with people as they discover they can do something new and creative, something that previously seemed a mystery, or even impossible.
My passion is art making and encouraging people to connect with God through creativity. Teaching Art Journaling and Art & Faith workshops in person and online are ways I live out that passion. My hope is to inspire people to believe in and improve their creative ability. Taking time to listen and respond to God through art making is a natural part of my life and faith journey, a combination of being and doing, a collaboration and conversation with God.
As an adult learner, I earned a Bachelor of Fine Arts in Painting, have attended and taught numerous workshops over the years, including how-to classes such as: coloring with colored pencils, painting and travel art journaling classes at local libraries; and exhibited art in galleries and exhibitions over the years. For ten years, I loved teaching Art and Art History to Jr. High and High School students, and volunteered in the Art Literacy program at a local elementary school.
Prayerful Doodling book published in 2018, is an outgrowth of connecting with God through creativity. In the book Paintings, Prayers, and Passages, I tell my faith journey through art. You may also find my work in Complete Guide to Bible Journaling and the Holy Bible: Mosaic, and Somerset Studio and Art Journaling magazines.
